Queen Elizabeth I by AvalonSky Queen Elizabeth I by AvalonSky
Well let me say this was something I just had to do. I just recently saw Elizabeth - The Golden Age in the theatres and loved it. I loved the first movie, when both my mom and I saw it on the screen in 1999. Cate Blanchett was and still is an amazing actress.

So as soon as I got home I kept thinking of what I wanted to work on as my next digital mixed media piece and I knew as I sat there that I wanted to create a portrait of her.

So lets get on to the particulars of what was done on this one....well I have literally lost count on the amount of hours...lets see, I have been working on this for almost a week now, staying up till almost 2 am working on it on and off. Her hair has been completely painted in by myself. The hardest part I would have to say was the dress, the body actually belongs to another stock model, whose hair was hanging down over the shoulders, so I had to rebuild a good portion of the entire top part of the dress, which was actually really hard to do because of the patterns upon it. The neck cuff was expanded and another lace bit was added on the back, etc.

Ah well, enough about explaining it all, you can look at the original links below to see where the changes and editing are. Just hope I did the Queen justice... Enjoy!

And of course, here is a link to the details on this piece, I am actually quite proud of her hair. hehe! [link]

Beautiful work! Elizabeth I is my idol! Even though she wasn't perfect, she was a strong woman and never let anything get in her way, even the people she loved. I love the way you have captured her in this picture! :D

Did you use Photoshop to make this? Could you post a tutorial? Also do you take commission artwork ideas?

Thank you! Unfortunately, my time is limited lately, to make a tutorial for it, since it was so long ago, but if I ever get the spare time, I will make some. Glad you liked it! :D

this is beautiful!
I'm a history nerd, and do a lot of renaissance faire work--most of it is set durring Elizabeths reign. she's incredible.

that being said, my inner nerd has to say that there are a few details that aren't perfectly period for a queen to be wearing....but really, it doesnt matter at all XD.
I LOVE IT!
amazing blend of photo/paint. just enough to make you look twice.

I'm shutting up now.

i can't help but be reminded of Queenie from "Black Adder" that hair is perfect! i did notice though that the lighting on her hands is more of a white where the face and chest are more gold in the light... mayhaps a candle is burning to her left and an open window is to her right near the floor? or maybe i'm seeing things...

Yep, you are seeing the lighting exactly as I have pictured it in my mind when making it, there is a open window the the right of her and there is a fire/candle.

Yeah, it was time consuming, but worth it. But that is also why I do not make very many of them, because it takes a long time and I have to be inspired, as I was on this one. Glad you liked it! :D

Awesome job right there! I really like this!

There's just one bit that I noticed: On the left side, between her shoulder and her neck -- just beneath the white lace -- is an unnatural looking shadow. Maybe you could brush it up or clone the skin tone from the right and darken it a little? Might help improve it a bit.

All in all, I was amazed. It's almost like collage only better. Well done! :)

The shadow you see is the natural shadow from her head and collar, due to the the light coming from her upper left side, so I will not be editing it out. But thank you for the suggestion and thanks for the compliments. :)
